This tour is a combination of an adventurous adrenaline rush with a breath-taking, scenic backdrop. Because this tour is done close by, you have the opportunity to enjoy a second activity the very same day, experiencing a full day of excitement in La Fortuna. Worldwide, rivers with whitewater are classified in six categories from class I (the easiest and safest) to class VI (the most difficult and most dangerous). In Costa Rica, the rivers that are most often run are classes I to IV. The most popular rivers for whitewater rafting are:Toro River:This river is classified as class III and IV, and about 1 hour away from the town of La Fortuna. The tour usually departs at 8:30 in the morning and includes about 2.5 hrs of rafting. The length of this river is approximately 10 miles, offering 45 incredible rapids. This tour is recommended for ages 13 to 55. Skill level: Intermediate to advanced. The water of the river is fed by the Poas Volcano, therefore, it may have a yellow tint from the sulfur.
Balsa River:Beautiful world-class rafting rivers abound here in Costa Rica. You will see many birds, lots of rainforest wildlife, and great views of the Arenal Volcano. The Balsa River offers class II & III rapids, making this an ideal tour for first-time river rafters. Plus, this half-day tour is only about 45 min out of town, which means less time driving and more time enjoying La Fortuna (especially since the tour doesn't begin until late morning). The length of the Balsa river is approximately 7 miles long and offers 25 rapids, taking about 2 hours to complete. No experience is necessary for this tour. Though a helmet and life jacket will be provided, it is still advised that you know how to swim. This tour is recommended for ages 7 to 65. Skill level: beginner to advanced.
